No game left behind?
Bioware's Knights of the Old Republic was an awesome game.
Obsidian picked up the sequel and did a fantastic job of it, really managing to capture what had made the first game fun.
Bioware's Neverwinter Nights was a masterpiece.
So.. one would expect, since Obsidian had picked up the sequal to Neverwinter Nights, we would be in for the same quality as was shown to KOTOR 2.
This did not turn out to be the case. Obsidian has taken NWN and contorted it into an almost KOTOR with D&D rules, and then shit it out on your computer!!
Lets make a list, shall we? Things NOT to do when making a sequel.
1. Find out what was good about the original and expand on it. Not completely change it or toss it out all together.
2. When making a big step up in terms of graphics, your animation should ATLEAST be as good as the OLDER game youre trying to improve upon.
3. Dont shamelessly reuse obvious important aspects of the old game. We've all heard these same voice sets for the last 4+ years. Why would you reuse each and every one in a game 5 years later? Did you not think anyone would notice the music is the same too?
4. Try to think about user accessability when making an interface. This is a no brainer folks.
5. If youre completely deviating from the formula of the original, IT DOES NOT DESERVE SEQUEL STATUS!
6. A good way to make sure you develop no community what so ever is to require the download of a seperate file for each server a player wishes to visit. That's gonna encourage people to hop online and play, isnt it. Great job there.
In short, I'd like to thank Obsidian for completely fucking up what could have been another fantastic online rpg. And for making NWN 1 look like its got a shiny coat of new paint. Seriously, spend about 2 hours with NWN 2 and the original will have never looked better...
